Latest Workforce Insight Data

The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) have recently released new figures which demonstrates the impact the covid-19 pandemic has had on the sport and leisure sector within the last year.

The latest report released indicates a shortage in staff across the sector throughout the UK, with a particular lack in swimming instructors, lifeguards and fitness instructors. However the need for staff has not been the issue, in fact in November 2021 alone, 33,536 vacancies were advertised throughout the country.

At Active Suffolk, we are proud of the partnership we have with CIMSPA and we are working to continually monitor the insight to ensure we are doing all that we can to support and develop our local workforce. We have been quick to react to earlier reports following the pandemic where we have collaborated with a number of vital partners and business organisations to develop a sector skills strategy.

Insight and consultation with partners has resulted in the development of headline recommendations for the next five years which will enable a workforce that is customer centric, inclusive and equipped with the right skills to initiate meaningful behaviour change and realise wider health and socio-economic benefits.

The Suffolk Sport & Physical Activity Sector Skills Strategy will enable the development of the workforce and address the key skills gaps which have widened during the Covid Pandemic. This will ensure the sector develops the skills and competencies required to be flexible, competent, and fit for purpose.

It looks like we are moving out of the "lockdown" phase of the Covid-19 pandemic, and we sincerely hope that everyone in the sector can now look forward and make plans for the future.

At the height of lockdown in 2020, you may remember that CIMSPA launched ReActivate, the Covid-19 Awareness training platform? More than 22,000 people used ReActivate, and a survey found that 93% felt an increased level of confidence about returning to their roles after completing the training.

However, the survey also identified a number of areas in which future support was needed:

  •   Awareness of the prevalence, impact and treatment of long Covid
  •   Engaging effectively with inactive adults with no pre-existing health conditions
  •   Communicating with customers, especially those who may be lacking the confidence to return to physical activity
  •   Awareness of the aspects of ageing that can be controlled or influenced through physical activity

To help address these needs, CIMSPA have just launched ReEngage - a free digital platform, designed to follow on from ReActivate and provide the sector's workforce with the skills and knowledge to confidently engage with people across all communities, helping them to access the benefits of sport and physical activity.

ReEngage is free for anyone working in sport, physical activity, leisure and fitness in England, including coaches and volunteers, and you don't need to have completed ReActivate training to sign up for ReEngage.

There is also a ReEngage employer platform, which is open to leisure and fitness employers, large community organisations and national governing bodies.

Whatever your role, the free online training has been designed to help you develop the skills and knowledge to confidently engage with customers and communities.

This year, CIMSPA is again partnering with Workplace Mental Wealth to explore the state of mental health at all levels of the workforce and we are calling on you for your support.

We all have mental health in the same way that we all have physical health. By taking part in the survey you'll be part of a nation-wide conversation to support the sector and its workforce.

This year will be the second year we are calling on employers to take part in the Workforce State of Mind Survey.

The good news is, once the survey is complete, CIMSPA will have year on year data to compare and will be able to draw trend conclusions to help everyone involved in the sector better understand the mental health of our friends and colleagues and where action is needed.

Answers are anonymous. Each survey only takes five minutes to complete.

How to take part

The employers' survey is open until 11 February 2022.

This survey is designed specifically for Senior Managers, Directors and Department Heads. It explores the approach and resources employers use to promote and support mental health at all levels of the workforce.

Complete the survey

How to access the results

Results will be announced first at the active-net conference. Book your place here. The report will be published on Workplace Mental Wealth's website. Likely by the end of March 2022.
