My Lockdown Activity Hero...

At the end of July, we launched our latest campaign "My Lockdown Activity Hero". The aim of this campaign is to celebrate and recognise the work and selfless acts from those within the local community who have supported us to stay well and carry out physical activity during the coronavirus pandemic.

We have had an overwhelming response so far, with just under 100 nominations coming through to us.

If you were motivated, supported or inspired to be active by someone within your local community during the coronavirus lockdown, we would love to hear your story. Nominations will be taken until Monday 31st August at www.activesuffolk.org/my-lockdown-hero

The Fit Villages project is BACK!

The long- established Fit Villages project led by the team at Active Suffolk has safely relaunched following the easing of the lockdown restrictions. The return to the Corton Village Hall to deliver the Tai Chi session was a huge success and the team are excited to announce their return to other rural villages across the county.

Chris Lawson, Project Officer for Fit Villages, Active Suffolk says:

"The return to Fit Villages was a really positive experience and the Tai Chi session in Corton was very relaxed. The instructor, Trevor and I worked closely to ensure a safe return and regular, effective communication with participants ahead of the session ensured everyone felt at ease. This also allowed us to minimise any necessary paperwork on the day of the launch, reducing contact and potential risk.

With the support of the village activator, Gill all equipment was thoroughly cleaned before participants entered the hall and chairs were spread out to ensure social distancing was adhered to. Hand sanitiser was provided for participants and the session itself flowed and everyone really enjoy being back!

We would really love to hear from anyone else in the county who would be interested in setting up a Fit Villages project within their local community so that we can continue supporting people across Suffolk to be active and reduce the risk of social isolation and loneliness."

What are the patients from Two Rivers telling us about the Active Wellbeing Service?

Our Active Wellbeing service supports older adults (50+) who are inactive, to become more active in an attempt to improve health and wellbeing. The service is delivered in various locations across Suffolk and we recently caught up with some of the patients from the Two Rivers Surgery in Ipswich.

  •   More than 20% of patients accessing the service at Two Rivers are now doing 60 minutes or more of physical activity each week after 3 months of support from the Active Wellbeing service.
  •   16% of patients are now also doing 150 minutes or more of physical activity per week compared to 8% at the beginning of their 3 months of support from the service.
  •   The increase in physical activity amongst patients has supported them to manage and improve their physical health, however results after 3 months have also told us that 71% of participants showed an improvement in mental wellbeing too!

This is what some of the patients have told us:

'It's surprising what exactly is 'out there' and what you can do as an individual on a daily basis without too much thought'

'Thank you for all your help and support, you do an amazing job and you are so easy to get on with which is the best.'

'I found the group session very informative and helpful….I have increased the amount of walking and I am looking forward to trying more of the other options'

'..I had a stroke last year and wanted to get fitter, more mobile…I now walk daily and do housework on most days. I feel fitter and my walking pace has increased.'
