Hello

We hope you are well and have been enjoying some of the beautiful sunshine.

This edition of the Health and Wellbeing newsletter includes, details of our new Function Fitness MOT videos, information regarding the launch of the Active Suffolk "Lockdown Activity Hero" campaign and feedback from some of the Active Wellbeing clients.

Functional Fitness MOT Testing

Every so often, the Active Suffolk team offer Functional Fitness MOT testing in the local community, however due to the coronovirus pandemic face to face testing in venues across Suffolk have been cancelled. The team are keen to continue supporting everyone by providing access to these tests, which is why we have been working hard to create videos for you to follow at home.

What are the Functional Fitness MOT Tests?

The Functional Fitness MOT tests were created by Glasgow Caledonian University and Later Life Training, who are both renowned training providers.

Each Functional Fitness MOT test comes with a set of "normal values" for people of different ages and this will give you an idea of whether you are "doing well" compared to your peers, or whether you could benefit from being more active. These everyday activity tests allow you to compare your performance with others of the same age and gender.

Within the local community, our Functional Fitness MOT testing is offered to adults aged 50+.

How can I access the Functional Fitness MOT Tests?

If you have access to the internet these videos will be available to be sent to you at the beginning of August. Simply send us an email at info@activesuffolk.org to request the link.

My Lockdown Activity Hero...

Throughout September 2020, Active Suffolk will be celebrating the work and efforts of people in the community who have helped to inspire and motivate us to be active during the coronavirus pandemic.

If you have been inspired, motivated or supported by a local instructor, sports club, teacher, friend or family member during this period, we want to hear about it!

Nominations can be submitted from Friday 31st July 2020. Set your reminders and send us your nominations at www.activesuffolk.org/my-lockdown-hero

Wojtek Wasag, personal trainer from Hadleigh, worked tirelessly during lockdown to support his local community to stay active. The online classes delivered through Facebook Live allowed people to continue with physical activity from the comfort of their home, whilst access to gyms and leisure centres was restricted.

Wojtek recently received recognition from the Mayor of Hadleigh for his efforts as pictured below.

We are really looking forward to hearing about more of the local activity heroes over the next month, so if you have been supported by someone in your community, please share the nomination with us before the end of August.

How are our Active Wellbeing clients benefiting from the service?

Following an Active Wellbeing consultation with Mair at the Two Rivers Medical Centre in Ipswich, Lorraine told us:

Following my consultation, I took up the OneLife Suffolk Adult Weight Management course and I have since lost 1/2 stone. I took your advise and I am also now walking more frequently. In fact, I walk over 2.5 hours a week and I am enjoying doing so."

Stephanie accessed the Active Wellbeing service from the Debenham Surgery and during her 3 month follow up, she told us:

"I joined an aerobics class following the advise of my Physical Activity Advisor. Before this, I was very lacking in confidence and a bit low, I didn't talk to myself kindly but now I go along and there is no pressure, I just have fun. I talk to people and my kids think it's wonderful. That wouldn't have happened without the support from this service."

An Active Wellbeing client from the Two Rivers Medical Centre in Ipswich told us:

" I am now doing lots of gardening and I have even started a project, building and decorating a tree house with my husband. I have recognised the need to continue to be active, I am busy and I have no intention of slowing down! I even spoke to the Yoga instructor you recommended to me and I am aiming to start this once things return to normal."
