Following a county-wide mapping exercise of existing exercise classes and the confidence of instructors to meet the needs of cancer patients, there was a clear requirement to upskill the existing professional workforce to provide more cancer specific exercise classes that instructors felt confident in delivering across the county. In conjunction with offering the bi-annual instructor training events through our partnership with the John Le Vay Cancer Information Centre we are able to offer up to 10 instructors a bursary on a Level 4 Cancer Rehabilitation course. Course RRP is £625, we can offer a £300 bursary place for up to 10 people.
As there is a real need for this, we have scheduled a 5 day course in Suffolk (at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure) week commencing 11th May 2020 in the hope we can attract and upskill our existing workforce. Three instructors in the county completed the course in July and it has not only increased the amount of cancer specific classes and referral schemes available in Suffolk but has vastly improved the knowledge and confidence of normal instructors to work with cancer patients, proving that we don't have to rely on referrals to specialist cancer groups.
Quote from an instructor who has recently completed the course:
'Having attended the Level 4 Cancer Rehabilitation course, has not only extended my knowledge of how to set up and deliver cancer related physical activity sessions, it has vastly improved my confidence as an exercise professional. It was definitely worth the investment and I'm very grateful to Active Suffolk and Macmillan for the bursary offer, it's not something I would have considered otherwise due to the high financial commitment as an independent instructor'
