Active Suffolk have distributed almost £200,000 worth of Sport England funding to charities and organisations across the county, to support the continued recovery of physical activity levels amongst key priority audiences following the pandemic (during which physical activity levels amongst adults dropped by 3.4% within Suffolk).

The Together Fund was a continuation of the Tackling Inequalities Fund that was set up in April 2020 as part of Sport England's support package to help the sport and physical activity sector through the coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis.

This funding had a particular focus on groups identified as being disproportionately affected by the pandemic and whose ability to be active had been significantly impacted. As with previous funding, the Together Fund was invested in four key audiences: Lower socio-economic groups, culturally diverse communities, disabled people and people with long-term health conditions.

Throughout the funding period; £196,760 of funding was distributed toward onward delivery of physical activity and to support the resilience of these opportunities. In total, 28 organisations throughout Suffolk were awarded funding, engaging an estimated 2328 people in physical activity.

The funding was split into two tranches, the first was utilised to support the delivery of physical activity and the second was to be used towards resilience support for the sustainability of physical activity provision for the key audiences.

Georgina Winter, Development Officer for Insight and Evaluation, said: "We at Active Suffolk are delighted to have been able to play a pivotal role in the distribution of Sport England's Together Fund within Suffolk.

"We have worked hard to ensure that the funding available was distributed within areas of the greatest need to a wide variety of community groups and organisations working with priority audiences.

The funding has allowed these group and organisations to develop and deliver brilliant projects which provide participants with the opportunity to get active and enjoy the benefits that being physically active can bring to their physical, mental and social wellbeing.

"Projects such as accessible dance classes for older adults, cricket, yoga and football sessions for the asylum seeking community, implementing life-changing mobility aids into specialist gyms to assist individuals with a disability and/or long term health condition with a higher variety of exercise options and the delivery of multi-sports sessions for children from lower socioeconomic areas are just a few of the fantastic opportunities we've been able to fund through the Together Fund.

"We are also very proud that through the Together Fund, we have been able to open the door for incredibly valuable conversations with new partners and that this has been a vehicle through which Active Suffolk could begin to introduce the benefits and importance of physical activity to organisations who had not delivered physical activity with their service users/participants before. 46.4% of organisations who received funding through the Together Fund had not received funding previously through the Tackling Inequalities Fund."

Distribution of the Sport England Together Fund has demonstrated that Suffolk has a vibrant and engaged network of organisations looking to ensure equitable access to physical activity across the county. The collective power of this network must and will continue to be utilised to engage local communities in the development of physical activities which reflect the needs and interests of the place in which they are being delivered.
