Nothing is stopping the Coddenham residents from being physically active!

Following the launch of the Fit Villages project in Coddenham, the Coddenham Centre now have a wealth of exercise classes for residents supporting them to be active and better connected with the community and local people.

In January 2020, the Fit Villages team at Active Suffolk linked up with the Coddenham Centre where local residents expressed a desire to try Nordic Walking. Despite the colder weather at the end of January, the first taster session was oversubscribed, and a second had to be organised to accommodate everyone. The sessions took off, with many residents from the village attending each week until they were disrupted by the new rules which were imposed by the lockdown in March.

As soon as the restrictions were lifted and it was safe to return in June, the centre was proactive in inviting the Nordic Walkers back for social distanced sessions.

Andrew MacPherson, Chair of the Coddenham Centre tells us:

"The help of Fit Villages and Project Officer, Chris Lawson has allowed the Coddenham Centre to introduce Nordic Walking to the community. The support has enabled us to facilitate professional training and guidance in a unique and effective exercise, for a vibrant community.

Since the initial launch and introduction of this activity, it has initiated a broader interest which is why we have been able to organise and offer additional sessions. In fact, The Coddenham Centre is now home to The Suffolk School of Nordic Walking."

The return following the lockdown was a huge success and the centre has since launched more sessions to accommodate the growing demand.

Chris Lawson, Project Officer at Active Suffolk said:

"The Health & Safety guidelines compiled by Kevin, the Nordic Walking instructor on the Fit Villages project, was fantastic and a fine example for other projects following the governments guidance.

The Coddenham Centre and Coddenham Community are making a substantial effort to offer activities for residents and are really trying to make the centre a hub for physical activity. We have now supported two Fit Villages Projects in Coddenham this year where the centre has now been supported to launch carpet bowls in addition to the very popular Nordic Walking sessions.

It is incredibly refreshing to see a community who have really brought in to improving their health and fitness."

In addition to the Nordic Walking and Carpet Bowls sessions, The Coddenham Centre have a range of classes available to try throughout the month.
