This Girl Can ambassadors from Suffolk share inspirational stories as part of an exciting new collaboration

Active Suffolk are the first Active Partnership in the country to work in collaboration with Humans of HIIT, an online community which showcases inspirational stories from those who have chosen to share their journey to fulfilling a more physically active lifestyle.

For one week from Monday 3rd August, Humans of HIIT will be sharing inspirational stories from some of the This Girl Can Suffolk ambassadors, a project which is led by the team at Active Suffolk. These stories will be shared online, with the aim of inspiring and motivating other females to overcome perceived barriers to sport and exercise and explore new ways to become active.

This Girl Can is a national campaign which was developed by Sport England in 2015 with the aim of bridging the gap between the disproportionate number of women participating in sport and physical activity compared to men. The campaign has grown tremendously over the years where it has supported nearly three million women to participate in sport and exercise through celebrating active females no matter their size, background or ability. The team at Active Suffolk manage the This Girl Can campaign locally and currently have over 40 active ambassadors who work to inspire other women to be more active and overcome barriers to participating in sport and exercise across the county.

The partnership between Humans of HIIT and the This Girl Can ambassadors in Suffolk has come at a time where more women are currently underachieving physical activity recommendations due to the negative impact of Covid- 19.

Research conducted throughout lockdown and published by Sport England has highlighted an increased divide between the number of women and men meeting the governments recommended guidelines of at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity over five days of the week, with only 24% of women meeting these recommendations, compared to 30% of men. Further research conducted and published by Women in Sport tell us that 32% of the women they surveyed felt they couldn't prioritise exercise during lockdown as they had too much to do for others.

Angela Soames, This Girl Can ambassador from Kesgrave admitted that the pandemic did affect her physical activity levels

"When lockdown was introduced it was a panic as I could no longer fit everything in, I had to adapt like everyone else. I was still working, whilst also looking after my daughter and even things like shopping were taking so much longer than before. I was fitting in walks with my daughter and decorating but I was unable to do the same activity as I did prior to lockdown"

The seven-day campaign between Humans of HIIT and Active Suffolk will share a collection of stories from local This Girl Can ambassadors, highlighting the positive impact physical activity has had on their lives. It is hoped these stories will encourage other women to consider new ways they can incorporate physical activity into their lives, whilst also celebrating the success, courage and dedication of some of our local women who have overcome a vast range of challenging barriers, from battles with mental health issues, body confidence and serious health conditions.

Charlotte Ditcham, This Girl Can ambassador from Debenham is just one of those sharing her story as part of the campaign.

"Having suffered with PTSD previously my fitness levels dropped from being an extremely active happy person to a couch potato with low confidence. Getting out walking and horse riding again was the start of improving both my mental and physical health and started my road to inspiring others to get active in all sorts of ways."

Alex Cole, Founder of Humans of HIIT says:

"Humans of HIIT is about motivating people to be more active, by sharing real personal stories and experiences of sport and physical activity. Stories shared include the highs and lows and how they overcame obstacles. There is no better joy than working in partnership with other organisations who have similar values and I believe these Active Suffolk stories, highlighting their amazing This Girl Can Ambassadors, will inspire women from all walks of life to start their journey towards a more active lifestyle."

Stories from the This Girl Can Suffolk ambassadors will be shared from Monday 3rd August – Sunday 9th August and can be found on the This Girl Can Suffolk, Active Suffolk and Humans of HIIT Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and you will find full stories at
