After a hugely successful "Daily Mile" Suffolk Schools run in 2019, as part of the Ipswich JAFFA Twilight 5K running event, the Most Active County partnership were very disappointed to have to cancel this years event which was scheduled for May due to the Coronavirus crisis.
However, not to be defeated the team have decided to deliver a Virtual Daily Mile Suffolk challenge between the 29th June and the 5th July, providing primary school pupils with the opportunity to receive a unique and limited-edition Twilight Daily Mile medal and E Certificate signed by Elaine Wyllie MBE, Founder of The Daily Mile.
Schools across the nation regularly take part in the daily mile, which encourages children to increase their physical activity levels and improve concentration and focus whilst at school. Across the nation, over 11,000 schools and nurseries are now on board with the initiative with 2,309,784 children now running a mile a day!
In Suffolk many of our local schools have made the Daily Mile a part of their usual routine, Chloe Welsh from St Gregory primary School in Sudbury says:
"At St Gregory's C.E.V.C Primary School we recognise the impact and importance of the Daily Mile having completed the it since 2017. As P.E lead it occurred to me that some of the younger children within the school would be undertaking this daily activity for some 6 years! I therefore wanted to ensure that the children continue to enjoy the Daily Mile so recognised the importance of creating new initiatives to keep it engaging for all year groups."
The Virtual Daily Mile Suffolk challenge has been set up to encourage children to keep up with regular activity whilst at home. Children will be encouraged to simply run, jog or walk The Daily Mile and send in a photo to claim your free medal!
