40 Suffolk residents who are currently inactive are being given the opportunity to change their lives and sign up for a supported run training programme in Ipswich, with the aim of completing the challenge of the Simplyhealth Great East Run half marathon on the 22nd September 2019.
Participants will receive an extensive programme of support which will include advice and guidance by double Olympic long-distance runner Paul Evans, expert weekly coaching sessions, gait analysis and exclusive discounts on running gear at Coes in Ipswich, specialist diet and nutrition support and entry into the Twilight 10k and Great East Run.
Over the course of 4 months, participants will be supported to develop their stamina, fitness and confidence to take on the 13.1mile course.
The programme which has been developed by Suffolk County Council is open to individuals over the age of 18 who are currently doing less than 30 minutes moderate to vigorous physical activity per week.
30 individuals completed the programme in 2018 and it is hoped that this number will increase in 2019.
The programme provides an opportunity for participants to embark on a life changing journey, which will see them complete the ½ marathon alongside 4,000 other runners.
Dr Amanda Jones, Director of Public Health, said: "Being inactive is a real risk to your health and can increase the chance of developing heart disease, cancers and many other illnesses. Increasing activity at any stage of your life can bring huge benefits to health and wellbeing. Mass participation events such as the Great East Run, can encourage individuals to start being more active and this support programme aims to help 40 inactive Suffolk residents to take those first steps, which are often so difficult.
"I would encourage anyone who is inactive to start taking more exercise and this opportunity may provide the extra push needed. There are still places available and so if you are considering becoming more active, but need some support and motivation, get in touch."
The Great East Run has continued to grow since the inaugural event in 2017, almost doubling the number of participants in just 3 years.
The Great East Run is one of the Great Run Company's portfolio of mass participation events, which also includes amongst others the Great North Run which is the World's biggest half Marathon.
To apply for a place on the programme, visit www.activesuffolk.org/ger2019 where full details of the eligibility criteria are available alongside the application form. On application the programme coordinator will then be in touch directly to discuss the programme in more detail.
Valued at over £300 per participant, the opportunities are being made available at a small one-off charge of £30 per person.
