Fit Villages has been nationally recognised for its work within the community after being crowned the Social & Community Development Project of the Year at The County Sports Partnership Network (CSPN) Convention in Nottingham on Tuesday.
CSPN, a nationwide network of 44 County Sports Partnerships (CSPs), hosts an annual convention at which the outstanding work of the Network is celebrated and the 'Good to Great Impact Awards' are presented. Across the network, 47 projects were submitted for consideration.
Fit Villages is a well-established project run by Suffolk Sport in partnership with Suffolk County Council and Sport England. It is delivered throughout Suffolk's smallest villages, bringing physical activity to communities that have limited provision for people to be active or take part in regular exercise. This much loved local project was highlighted as a case study example of good practice in sport England's latest Strategy 'Towards an Active Nation'.
Starting out as a means of overcoming rural transport issues and barriers to activity; Fit Villages has evolved and developed into the highly successful and much sought after flagship rural project it is today, impacting individuals and communities far beyond their physical wellbeing.
Tony Goldson Suffolk County Council's cabinet member for health commented '"As a partner in the project, Suffolk County Council is delighted that Fit Villages has been recognised for the impact it is having in helping people in rural communities to become more active. Thanks to the project there are now many more opportunities for people across the county to socialise, make new friends and be more active. This in turn is having a positive impact on health and wellbeing in Suffolk and is contributing to our long-term ambition of becoming the most active county in England."
Winning this award is testament to the positive feedback the project has received, one of the participants recently said "It is good for the community and it brings people together. Everybody enjoys it regardless of how fit they are or what age they are. They can all come & enjoy it in some shape or form & it is doing them good."
"We are delighted to have been awarded the Social & Community Development Project of the Year by CSPN; Fit Villages is a fantastic Project using Suffolk's rural assets as settings for physical activity and making a difference to village communities in Suffolk. To be recognised as an example of excellent practice on a national stage, is very rewarding." Hollie Wood, Suffolk Sports Fit Villages Project Co-ordinator.
