Whether you employ paid coaches to work in a school, or use volunteer coaches in a sports club, there are some basic guidelines to follow to help you get it right. UK Coaching provide guidance in this area including an ideal recruitment process.
UK Coaching hold the minimum standards for sports coaches which identify the criteria that employing organisations should verify for their coaches:
- Age & Qualification
- Insurance Cover
- Enhanced CRB or Scottish disclosure check
- Commitment to policies and procedures
There are also further considerations once a coach has been appointed, regarding their coaching activity, which can be addressed in an induction which may cover:
- Facilities, equipment and storage
- Codes of conduct for coaches and participants
- Risk assessments, supervision ratios, incident and accident reports and parental consent
- Policies and procedures, such as health and safety, child protection and equity
- Session objectives, training programmes and plans
- Registration, collection and cancellation procedures
- Participant information including age, ability, special needs and medical information.

GB Sport delivers informative training courses for Sport coaches, administrators and managers. The course is a four hour guide on the key business and taxation issues that affect those coaching and administering a sports coaching programme/business. Policies & Procedures
Coaches should be made fully aware of the policies, procedures and guidelines that will underpin the terms of their employment or volunteering.
Minimum Standards for Active Coaches
UK Coaching has produced an interactive guide to help organisations identify the minimum qualification (as stated by the relevant governing body of sport) required for a lead coach coaching children and young people in primary and secondary schools, clubs, communities and local authority settings.
We want all coaches and leaders to feel valued and confident, in order that they will be given every opportunity to develop and become the best they possibly can
It is recommended that a coach attends certain courses to meet minimum requirements; however, it is also important that they are also encouraged to undertake experiences which challenge them to become a better coach.
Once your coach is in place, it is advised that you undertake a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) with them, this helps to identify particular areas for development, what support is required, and what potential barriers there may be for the Coach to develop.
The Personal Development Plan (PDP) encourages the coach to identify specific actions and set timescales for completion. It is a great tool that can be used to direct reviews and appraisals.
