Ella Stewart & Samuel Blackwell
Ella and Samuel both aged just 11 decided they would embark on a challenge during lockdown which has inspired and motivated those around them to be more active. The duo are both part of the West Suffolk Swimming Club, West Suffolk Wheelers, and St Edmunds Pacers running club, all of which had to stop offering their usual sessions when lockdown was introduced.
In response to the lockdown measures and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic the pair committed to completing an Iron Man challenge in an attempt to inspire and motivate their club members whilst also raising money for their local hospital.
The iron man which consisted of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bicycle ride, and a 26.22 mile run (marathon) was completed in stages by Ella and Sam and included tethered swims in the back garden paddling pool, treadmill and turbo trainer rides on the bike and running and cycling around Bury St Edmunds.
The dedication of the pair was picked up by the local radio and British Triathlon who praised them for their efforts during such a challenging time.
One person told us:
"Their challenge inspired other members of their clubs to get out and exercise, during a time where they were unable to participate in exercise in their usual way. It motivated them to find different ways to exercise... It has inspired myself to exercise and to keep this up on a regular basis."
Well done to the pair for inspiring their local club members to be active and selflessly committing to a challenge to raise money for such a worthy cause.
